Kotahitanga mō te Taiao Alliance
🌐KMTT is a partnership of 17 iwi (Māori tribes), councils, and government agencies working collaboratively to regenerate land and sea ecosystems across the top of New Zealand's South Island. They blend Indigenous knowledge and Western science to deliver large-scale biodiversity restoration, climate adaptation, and regenerative economic development. The alliance strengthens local initiatives by creating shared strategies, aligning efforts across diverse actors, and facilitating community-led action.
Bioregional Context
The northern region of New Zealand's South Island encompasses 3.4 million hectares of mountains, rivers, forests, and coastline. This region holds immense ecological significance, with native flora and fauna found nowhere else on Earth, alongside culturally significant landscapes stewarded by Māori for generations. Historically impacted by colonization, commercial forestry, and extractive industries, the region is now a focal point for regenerative restoration.
