A holistic development initiative launched in 2018 that focuses on demonstrating regenerative practices as viable alternatives to extractive systems, shifting from passive to participatory societies, upholding feminine principles and cultural preservation, and supporting locally led decision-making and inclusive economic models.

Bioregional Context

The Guanacaste region comprises approximately 380,000 hectares of primarily cattle land, with a history of livestock farming spanning 400 years. The area faces significant environmental challenges, including being a world leader in pesticide use per capita, with 64% of fresh vegetables containing unsafe pesticide levels. The region has experienced substantial soil degradation, losing approximately 200 tons of topsoil per hectare annually.


Background

Costa Rica’s global reputation for conservation and carbon neutrality sits uneasily beside Guanacaste’s reality: 380,000 cattle hectares after four hundred years of ranching, heavy pesticide use, and soil loss—75% of national soil already gone, 95% loss by 2050 projected, with brown river plumes visible far offshore after rain. Latin America and the Caribbean, one of Earth’s most biodiverse regions, have lost 94% abundance. As Eduardo Muñoz puts it, the crisis is less about charismatic megafauna than about the sheer volume of life slipping away: "So when people look at me with squared eyes—oh, it's not about the panda bear, it's not about the polar bear—no, it's about the amount of life that we're losing."

Origins and Network

Costa Rica Regenerativa began in 2018 to show regeneration on the ground—not only in theory—at a scale that could eventually reach the country. Muñoz frames the aim as building a future from abundance rather than scarcity through regeneration: "What we're trying to do is build a better future and a future that is based on abundance and not scarcity, and do this through regeneration."

Philosophy & Approach

The group’s mental model places a living Earth at the base of a torus and spiritual connection at the top—dimensions that make some academics uncomfortable but that Muñoz treats as necessary for any transition: lasting change needs the ongoing integration of nature with a sense of something larger than ourselves.

Regenerative development, in their usage, is holistic rather than reductionist: benefits for many kinds of life, measured in hope beyond GDP metrics—hope, education, transparency, quality, peace, and conditions that enable life, not only minimized harm. A core shift is from “humans and nature” to humans as nature—simple to say, hard to live, and prerequisite to real progress. They argue for local cooperative democracy in place of democracy-as-usual that no longer delivers, and for bringing in youth—especially young women—while moving aside exhausted political styles.

Culture is identity glue, not spectacle, and it is eroding faster than biodiversity. The “feminine principle” ties food, care, and heritage to how landscapes are treated. Philosophically they move from a vertical, human-centered hierarchy toward an ecosystem frame and then toward a life-centered ethic—knowledge, technology, and wisdom in service of life, reversing the old order. Responsibility for that future is collective, not ministers; it sits with people on the ground.

Community Food Security Project

Community Food Access Regenerative Agriculture

When COVID-19 stopped tourism in Guanacaste, Costa Rica Regenerativa mobilized 500 farming families in a belt skeptics had called unsuitable for vegetables. Drawing on Cuban methods and Indigenous growing practices, they rebuilt severely degraded plots—harvesting water, stretching dry-season use, and rebuilding dark soil with carbon and mulch along lines developed over decades by Manders. Harvests came quickly; a mother told him the children’s eyes were shining again and their skin smooth again—something no economic return could match. A simple monitoring scheme used color rings on trees so non-readers could scan farm health at a glance. Cooking workshops helped families accept bitter traditional crops. Food forests followed for easier management and climate resilience. Teenagers—including young women on survey drones—gained skills that could keep rural life viable.

Savory Hub Initiative

Regenerative Grazing Habitat Connectivity

The Savory Hub work targets 380,000 regional cattle hectares. Farmers who dedicate 15–30% as corridors can sharply raise returns while giving land back to wild connectivity. Large forest patches (over 500 hectares) anchor the map; farms stitch between them. A 40-year initiative with Replanet began at 30,000 hectares with room to grow toward two- to three-hundred thousand hectares via carbon markets, aiming for broad “360” benefits—farm income, carbon, water, and roughly a third of the landscape supporting nature. Regeneration draws on Lacandon practices with balsa and mulch rather than planting full-sun timber rows; it accelerates processes that fit local biology. Insect monitoring showed fivefold insect population gains, with beneficial species dominating pests—work neighbors first read as “crazy.” Bats—about half of local mammal species—signal ecosystem integrity.

The program works through technical schools, pairing demonstration sites, student training, and carbon finance for fences and water. Farms document ~0.5 inch annual soil gain and up to $110,000 first-year income. Trainings include homemade repellents from chile, onion, and garlic so practices stay affordable and ecological. Soil-centered climate work ties to ~150% emissions offset via food—buying time, as Muñoz notes, for better batteries and other hard tech.

Educational Hive

Learning Programs

Muñoz sees formal education as misaligned with present needs; the Hive, built with Ugal, links experts, learners, and bioregions for applied projects, with achievements logged in a passport-style record. A Ghana school food-forest illustrates what becomes possible when learning meets place. A purchased farm is becoming an on-site training center; a Peru-born program brings nature itself into schools as teacher.

MRV Collective Development

Ecological Monitoring

The MRV Collective (measurement, reporting, verification) seeks transparency for regenerative outcomes. Sensors track eleven soil parameters; the aim is reliable field data and burial protocols so regenerative management is not left only to costly consultants while chemical inputs carry ready labels.

Vision and Legacy

Costa Rica Regenerativa keeps demonstrating regeneration across food, grasslands, education, and measurement—often ahead of government, regrettably, but visibly enough to persuade. Muñoz ends on intergenerational urgency: hope that humanity can still change course in time, that a new human–nature relationship is possible, and a father’s question—whether his son will be ready for that future.

The initiative continues to show that restoring land, communities, and biodiversity can be practical, healing, and economically credible—not optional.
