Kwiakah Nation
🌐A small First Nation in British Columbia led by Chief Steven Dick, focused on developing an Indigenous-led, conservation-focused regenerative economy in their ancestral territory. They're implementing regenerative forestry practices, developing sustainable businesses from kelp farming to ecotourism, and creating replicable models for climate-resilient economic systems.
Bioregional Context
The Kwiakah territory encompasses the coastal rainforest ecosystems of Phillips Arm and Frederick Arm, located an hour by boat from Campbell River on Vancouver Island. This bioregion includes the Phillips Estuary/ᕈNacinuxᵂ Conservancy and the Pałəmin/Estero Basin Conservancy, protecting 4,439 hectares of interconnected marine, estuary, lake, and river systems. The area represents significant ecological value with temperate rainforests, salmon-bearing rivers, and coastal marine environments that support rich biodiversity including grizzly bears and diverse aquatic species.
